Getting Started

I’m brand new to Meshtastic, and am running into a few roadblocks getting my first radios up and running.

I’m literally following the guide here because I’m a noob: Overview | Meshtastic

I have 2x LILYGO TTGO T-Beams v1.1, ESP32, and am located in the US (915mhz). I’ve welded the screens and can send messages between the two.

I’ve flashed the firmware: firmware-tbeam-1.2.50.41dcfdd.bin to each.

I’m running the “good first test” steps from the above link. One is connected to my computer, and one is on, running on battery. I’m running these commands through Git Bash.

“meshtastic --info” works fine
“meshtastic --set region US” works fine as well
“meshtastic --sendtext hello1” shows up on the other radio fine… but never shows up on the computer connected radio
“meshtastic --nodes” returns the following:

I’ve dug through these forums and can’t find anything regarding this issue.

Has anyone seen this before?

the screen behavior is normal, messages won’t show on the senders display.

Im wondering if this is normal, as I’ve only noticed this behaviour since I updated fim from 1.2.45. which had all screens display message.

correct, this feature was included in fw v1.2.47

Some have requested this functionality be returned for certain use cases. I’m in favor of putting a preference in place to toggle it back on for those that want it.

Also, thanks for the info about the sending radio not showing the message. It contradicts to the “Getting Started” page.

@thebentern I’d say for the most part it’s users noticing a change in behavior, not really an issue.

@bhsport thanks for reporting the docs needed changes. fixed.

  • update meshtastic CLI to the latest 1.2.76 and check if meshtastic --nodes works.
  • if not, run meshtastic --info --debug and share the output here.
  • maybe has something to do the “#” , try removing it from the name and check again.

Agreed, has mostly been people testing.

This brings up a good point. Maybe us as PR reviewer‘s can do a little better. If someone submits a change to existing behavior, we should also insist that person send out a communication either on the forum and/or as a YouTube developer video.

Alright… first of all… thanks a ton for the help… hopefully this thread can help someone else out there.

I changed the radio name… removing the “#.”

Then, I ran this:
$ pip3 install --upgrade meshtastic
Requirement already satisfied: meshtastic in c:\users\brian\appdata\local\programs\python\python39\lib\site-packages (1.2.77)

So it looks like I already have 1.2.77.

Then I ran the debug… it kept getting into “in character loop… reading character” hundreds of times. I removed the duplicates of these lines so it would be easier to look at.

I know it’s a lot of info, and I understand if you can’t help. Thanks in advance.
