As opposed to just using the phone’s own radios/GPS?
Is it just battery life? If so, wouldn’t it be a viable alternative for short-term use?

The hardware provides LoRa which allows communicating up to miles point to point at low bandwidth and power without requiring access to a cellphone tower. The wifi/bluetooth on the phone use much more power and can only communicate up to ~100ft or so.
