Immediately after the Meshtastic splash logo, I continually get the increasing brightness behaviour. Is my brand-new TTGO-TBEAM pooched? Are they any hardware self-tests?

Welcome to the community! You have likely flashed the wrong .bin file. Make sure you double check the file name for the t-beam firmware.

i have T-beam neo m8n t22_v1.0 , firmware firmware-tbeam-EU433.bin , board work without gps data. board join to mesh.
can i see you log here? (use terminal via USB)
Yes, to view the debug message outputs you can use a terminal program like PuTTY that allows you to set the baud rate to 921600.
