Got 3 new kits today, updated firmware. Tried to connect via blutooth, always fails. No screen, 123456 pin is what i used. Connect to laptop for power.
You may want to connect using the serial mode. use the client.meshtastic.org, and once you get connected, go to "bluetooth, make sure it is enabled, and use a fixed PIN, here you can also reset the default to something you know.
Thanks Jim, I was able to get into the unit and it was set for random pin.
is there an option to power off the unit without unplugging it from power. ? if I hit the little button it seems to just reset it.
yes, when you are connected to ble , you can “shutdown” in config menu.
for wakeup, you need to repower, or button.
Yes, and kilroy is absolutely correct.
Hmm I came here as I am experiencing issues with connecting to via bluetooth to a RAK4631 node (with no screen).
The output of meshtastic --get bluetooth --port COM9
Connected to radio
bluetooth:
enabled: true
fixed_pin: 123456
Everytime I try to pair my phone (pixel 8 pro Android 14) finds the node and then asks for the code, which I enter in, then I just get “Pairing failed, please select again” I have tried on two separate RAK4631 nodes, same result. So I am at a loss as to what to try next. Note this is the first time I have tried to connect the android app to the node, so I have no reference to it working and then not.

Do not pair the Mesh radio with the phone outside of the Meshtastic app. I’ve run into the same, inconsistently, but it’s easy enough to overcome I’ve never looked into it more deeply.
Enter your phone’s BT menu, and remove the Mesh radio you’re having trouble with.
Now, without first pairing the two, but with Bluetooth enabled on the phone, enter the Meshtastic app. Go to the clients tab (cog icon), click the green plus button to add a new client. Meshtastic should show you unpaired radios. Select and pair from there and it ought to stick.
I dunno if that’s a bug or not, but it’s easy enough to workaround I’ve just gotten used to it.
Best luck!
I am only using the meshtastic app to do the pairing, although I did consider pairing just with the phone and seeing if that works. There are no nodes paired in the phone menu (just checked), only the items I have previously paired are showing.
Within the MT app, when I click on the plus (to add node) it shows two nodes (short name and then four chars eg RAK_1b3d), I select the one I want and then it asks for a passcode, which I enter, as above and then get the pair failed message.
In terms of the mesh interconnect, this does work out of the box (was a little too easy, if you know what I mean)
I just set as NO_PIN and can now pair from within the app. So that works!!
When I look at the paired devices (phone BT menu) the MT node is constantly appearing and disappearing, synced to the blue LED on the RAK4631. So I think that is the key to this whole problem, the MT/Phone finds the MT node, and requests the PIN but then drops out.
Actually I have a better theory that makes much more sense. I have this node connected to my USB hub and when BT turns on this pulls too much power and causes it to drop out. Then it drops power and (re)enables BT, in between times the pairing token is lost (when I had no pin set it could do the whole transaction in the one go). I hooked a battery to the RAK node and now it doesn’t do the dropping out and maintains a connection. Now it has paired once it seems to stay paired (across multiple delete reinstall of MT App, delete out of phone. I want to rewind and try to qualify that is actually the issue.
So it seems like the takeaway from this is, it works out of the box, it just was starved of power and losing the pairing token.
If you get this same thing, make sure it has power!!
Cheers.
