has any progress been made on a completely standalone Pi/Raspbian software that would allow a desktop experience on a Pi without using a browser interface or an internet connection?
Just curious, why would this need a dedicated ‘image’?
As I understand it the native linux build works just fine on PI. It can be installed in almost any PI build.
A ‘desktop client’ (to talk to the local running meshtastic firmware instance) could be theortically be built. But again not sure it would need a dedicated built could just be a an installable application.
In general would think it would be much better to make a installable application, so could be installed on any computer, not just PIs. (although of course the computer would require the hardware to talk to the Lora Radio/Modem and potentially UART for GPS module)
Would free meshtastic from maintaining a custom build, and allow ri-pi users to install meshtastic, without having to start again with a new computer image.
We’re on completely different use cases.
The work-in-progress device-ui project will support Linux native devices as well, allowing you to control it without browser interface or internet connection. Maybe that suffices for your use-case.
This would be nice for any computer. My preferred starting point would be a NixOS configuration file that sets up a working interface and that whole lot in an image. Not everyone’s idea of smart but that is what I was thinking. The main reason was that I want to run my nodes on a linux phone and that might cross over easily one day using NixOS, but I speculate and am a novice.
looks like it may already be done:
I haven’t seen any discussion of this device amid the barrage of ‘what’s the cheapest way to…’
