Modem presets in real world

Hi everyone, being a newbie the question regarding the modem presets may be silly, but I am unsure. Do all the Meshtastic devices need to use the same modem preset to communicate between them or not ?

As in some situations a longer range option would be necessary, in order to transit messages, but not needing a confirmation from the recipient.

Thanks.

For Meshtastic devices to be able to communicate with each other directly, the LoRa modem settings (presets/modulation – see Table 2 at Semtech’s overview) need to be the same.

It isn’t strictly necessary if every node connects to MQTT, but that would defeat the purpose of Meshtastic, wouldn’t it?

Hi jdstroy !

Thanks for the reply, MQTT is not the way I’m thinking to go. The idea is being able to send messages when SHTF to people in my network, so basically, as long we all share the same settings / presets, it won’t be an issue… Eventually using a repeater / router on a high point to get a better coverage…

No problem. Yeah, if you’re using Meshtastic for the LoRa functionality, you need to use the same modulations (~=presets) and common keys (at least, for the virtual channel you plan to use, or the default keys for the default channel) for all radios in the same group. HTH!
