A radius filter for long.fast via mqtt would be good. Like only downlink nodes within 200km for example.
I will have a play tomorrow and see if I can get an mqtt up and running for Australia.

OK anybody want to help me test and see if I got this thing working? Just change your mqtt server to
mqtt.getlost.com.au
and leave the rest the same, same username and password as the default.
Message me on LongFast.
I tried. Not sure if I have everything configured correctly. I don’t see a LongFast channel or any other nodes, apart from my own
Did you send a message while connected? You won’t “see” a LongFast channel - you have to have that on your own device. You can then drop a message in it. It also needs to have uplink and downlink enabled. Note: you probably don’t want LongFast to have uplink and downlink running on the default mqtt server or you’ll get overloaded. You won’t see any other nodes until they say something, so drop a message and I’ll reply. I plan to keep it all online now indefinitely.
No evidence of connection in the log. All you need to do is change the url for the server and leave the rest as default.
UPDATE: I now have a repeater (technically it’s in router_client) set up, connected to this new mqtt server, repeating all, and with up-and-downlinks to longfast on this server. It doesn’t quite have a line of sight down into the melbourne burbs just yet - but it’s up the hill, at Upwey. I will investigate moving it to somewhere further up the hill with better coverage of melbourne. It’s a heltec with a 1262, and a 9dbi fibreglass antenna on the roof so hopefully some of you can reach it even before I move it.
I’m also in Fitzroy and interested, but I just walked in and know NOTHING yet, no equipment , no knowledge… but thought I’d reply anyway, just to flag
@mercury That’s awesome. Happy to help with any questions you have. I am near Coles in Smith St. Are you close by?
For the others asking about frequencies, that will likely be decided once we have a few people that can reach each other. I only buy 915mhz radios as I am not a licensed ham, what are others using?
LongFast message sent. It has a tick
@Bikeham Didn’t hit the server.
The tick might be local via RF.
You changed your server url and MQTT is switched on?
@DanM - very cool, I am on Brunswick St, in highrise, likely have a clear line of sight to you even.
As I said, I’m just starting to explore this - what equipment is needed, and what options?
Any tips from anyone of where to look for best initial info appreciated
Yes to both. I’m on 433 MHz, but that shouldn’t matter.
That will work well, the more height the better!
You can get started with 2 x LILYGO T3S3 boards (SX1262 915MHz) - You will want 2 to test them out.
I got mine from AliExpress and they arrived pretty quick.
Meshtastic has a lot of good documentation for getting started here:
You don’t have to do much configuration, just download the Meshtastic app on your phone, Bluetooth pair your radio to it and set it to ANZ then you should be able to chat.
Don’t know what’s up then. Will do some more testing tomorrow now I have my repeater running. I’ll drive out of range and ping it over MQTT. Thanks for trying it out for me. I’ll let you know once I get it sorted.
I don’t think it is working for me. When I ping the URL I get:
PS C:\Users\Dan> ping mqtt.getlost.com.au
Pinging getlostlive.ddns.net [203.129.52.123] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

wave Joining in the fun…
I tried connecting to mqtt.getlost.com.au a few times and the connection has dropped out which seemed to confuse meshtastic into dropping the wifi and not reconnecting after a while.
Seems to be a little more stable now, but I’m assuming people are asleep rather than watching LongFast.
The ping might not work unless you include the 1883 port because other stuff is running on that server and some of it might block the ping. Server does look like it’s up, and it works for a while then gets unstable not sure why. will investigate. thanks for your help.
Thanks for the info - will be looking at it, will let you know progress/questions
Good to see some locals popping up here! I’m on the other side of the hill, but I’ll see if I can ping off a message when I’m over that way next.
Have got a router client running inside, but there’s no way it’ll see your without a couple of intermediate nodes in Menzies Creek and Selby
@Vertikar the repeater is down while I move it into the roof. The MQTT server appears to work fine though - had a chat to someone here through it yesterday.
Hi All,
I’m in the southeast (near Ashwood).
I’ve got some gear coming then I’m going to get a node running and maybe a repeater depending whats around me.
Im getting a Lilygo for the node , a couple heltecs for on the move and a cubecell setup to make a “dumb” lora repeater.
Anyone in this general area ?
