Co-Locating 2m/70cm Ham Antenna with Meshtastic 915mhz Antenna

BLUF: Wil putting a Meshtastic Device on the same mounting pole with a 2M/70CM Ed Fong J-Pole Antenna Cause Interference with the Meshtastic Device?

Looking at placement for a solar node at the house. I have a pole on the side of the roof that traditionally holds a Satellite TV Reciever Dish. It currently holds an RCA Log Periodic (horizontally polarized) for OTA Television and above that is a Ham Radio J-Pole antenna.

  1. Any harm in putting the Solar Node near the Ham Antenna?
  2. Will keying up on 2M (145mhz) or 70CM (440mhz) at 50 watts overload the 3dbi 915mhz antenna and circuitry of the Meshtastic?

If so, I’ll just find a different place for it.

Max RF RF Input Level of LoRa device is stated is stated as 10dBm.

On the receive side, there is little in the way of filtering.

So is it likely that a nearby 50W transmitter at 440Mhz will generate more than 10mW at the RF input of the LoRa device ?

I’d either put a band pass filter in front of the 915MHz radio, or get it further away. Or both if needed.

Sounds like I should move it to the other side of the house. Easy enough.
Only reason I was putting it on the Antenna Pole was for Maintenance. But if I get one that takes OTA updates then only a critical system failure would necessitate a visit up to the roof. I’m good with that.

Thanks for all the good info guys. That’s what I love about this community. What looks like a simple / stupid question actually has a deeply technical answer and someone is there to deliver the goods. Thank you!

Try to use a bandpass filter. That will insure you that all other type of transmission won’t get to your Lora device.

If your physical device is near the antenna, maybe shield the box, like a Faraday cage?
