Dear brave alpha testers. I’m sorry the 1.1.6 had such a serious bug with android firmware update. Thank you for all your great feedback.

This release of the android app and device code fixes that problem. But if you previously installed 1.1.6 of the device code you’ll need to install from the .bins in github. From henceforth, firmware updates done over bluetooth should properly preserve your region settings.

The other fix from this release is that there was an occasional crash of the device code, but thanks to a good bug report I was able to get a stack trace and fix the root problem.

(Also for this week and next I’ll be coding slightly less than usual because I’m helping with some β€˜real life’ non software problems :wink: )

I assume this means if we installed device 1.1.6 via OTA, then there is no OTA method to update (only a usb install) ?

yes alas, true - the 1.1.6 OTA process permanently discarded (oops) your region settings. Sorry about that - because of how I was testing with my IDE the problem didn’t show up for me.

You’ll need to install from USB (unless you happen to be in the USA - in which case the default region settings for β€˜unknown’ region will be USA). :wink:

Nice! I updated both my tbeams 1.1.6->1.1.7 ota. I submitted a bug report which I hope is helpful because the update button didn’t grey out when I was updating the second tbeam. Also I noticed that only 1 of my tbeams is reporting that it’s on AC power, despite both being plugged into the wall. Other than that, no immediate issues.

On Huawei Media Pad (android 7.0) with app 1.1.7 using three tbeams (6N and 8N) I get a good connection and texting works well. GPS fix is still an issue. 50 minutes from startup to all having a gps location and finally appearing in mapbox. I assume when they sleep they switch off the gps and only reconnect when the middle button is pressed. The devices (or app?) remember(s) all six I have used before and still adds some of them to mapbox! The page listing the devices correctly puts a ? mark against the devices not even switched on.

This was the first time I did a update via bt and everything worked out well. I was on 1.1.2 and updated to 1.1.7. Great work. :wink:

Hrm. Not updating from BT here. Just flashing a TTGO LORA32 using ESPHome-Flasher-1.3.0-Ubuntu-x64 with the firmware-tlora-v2-US-1.1.7.bin results in the following message every couple of seconds in the console output and a blank display on the LORA32

Power cycling the device leaves you with a blank screen.

Flashing firmware-tlora-v2-US-1.1.6.bin results with it booting successfully and only getting a similar message when you press the micro switch on the board.

Yes sounds like the issue I’m having too, Hopfully this helps. After flashing firmware-tlora-v2-1-1.6-US-1.1.7.bin and rebooting I get a blank screen, firmware-tlora-v1-US-1.1.7.bin and firmware-heltec-US-1.1.7.bin both work,
this is tested on
3x tlora-V1 All worked with 1.1.7
3x tlora-v2.1-1.6 None work with 1.1.7 But do with 1.1.6 and below
2x heltec-v2 All worked with 1.1.7
I don’t have a tlora v2 but the issue satkiwii is having sound like the same issue

I just wanted to update my heltecs from 1.1.2 to 1.1.7 via bt and both either rebooted on pressing the update button resulting in update tailed or the update instantly failed. After force closing the app i encountered this behavior in every other attempt.

After sending a message from the device to the mesh the update successfully completed.

Putty Log

Hi I add a link to my log - hope it works. I have two tbeams (EU865; 1.1.7) and the app is 1.1.7. I cannot understand all the content of the log but after gaining a gps fix both devices don’t seem to regain a fix. They are sitting by a window in my home so not quite a full test. I hope to test them for real later this week. Other than the fix they seem to be working fine. Battery usage points to three days between charging.

Hi @geeksville, thank you for your contribution to the public domain. I’m a new user and wanted to share my experience with the alpha firmware.

Meshtastic-device: 1.1.7 (from GitHub, flashed via ./device-install.sh -f firmware-tbeam-US-1.1.7.bin)
Meshtastic-Android: 1.1.5 (via Aurora Store)
Meshtastic-python: 1.1.7 (via PyPI)
Radio: (2x) TTGO T-Beam v1.1 (without screen)
Phone: (2x) Pixel 3, Android 11
Desktop: Debian Bullseye, Python 3.8.6

Testing notes:

  • Flashing via device-install.sh on Debian Bullseye was straight forward and the documentation was clear.
  • BT connectivity is consistent once paired, disconnecting and reconnecting was generally fast and reliable.
  • Determining the BT pairing PIN via serial console was tricky. The incantation that eventually worked: 1) flash the device, 2) unplug from USB, 3) power off, 4) power on, 5) plug back into USB, 6) start meshtastic --noproto, 7) initiate pairing from Android app, 8) watch for *** Enter passkey output in serial log, 9) input PIN in Android. N.B. when skipping the unplug/plug and or cycle, the *** Enter passkey line was never printed. I can reproduce this with both radios.
  • GPS fix takes some time and doesn’t seem to occur on initial boot, this may be expected given 15 minute report interval. If this is unexpected, my theory is that the radio is sending coordinates via BT but, if the phone is not yet paired, the message is lost until the next update.
  • Android map sometimes shows GPS position of the radio which a phone it is paired with (the β€œlocal” radio), however, I have never been able to see the remote radio’s GPS position. I can reproduce this with both radio/phone combinations.
  • The charging state and battery level of remote radio is often wrong in the serial console for the local radio and in the Android app, which makes me think it is a signalling issue between the radios.
  • Radio messages are sometimes be rejected, namely fromId does not always seem to be populated in received messages Received: {'from': 1234, 'to': 5678, 'decoded': {'position': {'batteryLevel': 100}}, 'id': 9999, 'rxSnr': 7.0, 'rxTime': 1604439568, 'hopLimit': 3, 'fromId': None, 'toId': '^all'}

@satkiwii Can you try connecting to the device over serial at 921600 baud and see what it says for you? It looks to me like you are using 115200 baud (not correct) and so we can’t get the interesting parts of the log.
